chris higginbottom

Born in London in 1977, Chris took piano lessons from the age of 7 and joined Waltham Abbey choir a year later, where he became head chorister. He began playing the drums at 11 and some of his earliest performing experience came with the Essex and National Youth Jazz Orchestras.

Four years of study at the Royal Academy of Music resulted in a performance degree with first class honours in 2000, and in the same year his co-led group, the Higginbottom/Mayne Quartet was awarded the Perrier Young Jazz Band of the Year prize.

Chris went on to perform with many of the UK's leading artists including Tim Garland, Guy Barker, Jason Rebello and Christine Tobin, before moving to New York in the Autumn of 2002. He went to college for a further year at the New School in Greenwich village, and since living in the States has played with such notable musicians as Mark Murphy, Eric Lewis, Ingrid Jensen and Gary Bartz, and at numerous prestigious venus including Birdland (New York), Blues Alley (Washington), and the Deer Head Inn (Pennsylvania).

His debut album as a leader, 'One', was released on the British label Basho Records in the UK in September '05 and will shortly be available in the US, and features Seamus Blake, Aaron Goldberg and Orlando Le Fleming.
